How do I make a high power audio amplifier?

Do I need an amplifier? (Repost because no one is answering)?

I've recently purchased a set of Audio Technica M50 Limited headphones and I was wondering if I should buy a PORTABLE amplifier to power them. Will it make a huge difference in sound? Sound quality is very important to me but if the change in sound is not significant I may just pass on an amp. Bonus question: how does a portable amp compare with a normal one?
