How often do you change guitar strings?

How often should I change my guitar strings?

  • I have an elecric guitar, its a Squire. My sister got me new strings today and i havent really changed my strings since i got the guitar except for one so should i change them now? I've had my guitar for about 5 months. They seem fine to me but i have no idea lol

  • Answer:

it really depends on the player. your diet and habits show up on your strings. how much you sweat, fatty foods, alcohol, tobacco and left handed tobacco...etc. some people also have really acidic sweat. i generally change them when the 3 high strings turn black and/or pop off (3-4 months for me).

Totally depends on how much you play. some musicians change strings every night or so. Most people can play for a few months before changing strings. If you just play casually you probably don't need to change them except for every 3 or 4 months. Just keep an ear- if they are not holding their pitch as well, harmonics aren't right, or the tone sounds bad, then it's probably time to change.

You should change your guitar strings when they start to sound muffled and become out of tune more often. I know some people who change their strings before every gig they play. I believe it depends on how often you play it. Every 5-8 months would be best.
