What is the work of Red Cross?

How do i get my ipod to work when i charge it it just comes up with a big red cross please help?

i live in england but have just come back from the usa and while i was there i found and ipod classic. now i am home i am trying to charge it and it charges a bit but then it just comes up with a big red cross and a link to www.apple.com/support/ipod and i have tried there but have had no success in finding a solution to my problem. i have no idea what this big red cross means, does it mean it is internally broken? and how do i get rid of this problem so i can use the ipod normally? please help as i have no experience in dealing with ipods and have never had one before. please if you could help i would be very greatful thank you very much :)
