Why doesn't my iPod hold very much?
-
I have the new fifth gen iPod Nano. I think there is something wrong with it... the only options are either 8gb and 16gb right? so why does it say my iPod is 7.35GB and if 4GB holds up to 1000 songs why does mine only hold almost 900 if most the songs are like under 2 or 3 minutes... could I return it and just buy another to see if that works?

Answer:
All ipods round up, so 7.35 sounds about right. And it doesn't matter how long the song is necessarily, but what quality you've downloaded it as. So look at the file size. The number of songs is probably based on a smaller file size.

A tricky thing that apple does is when it says that it has an 8gb capacity it actually has less because of the room that the Operating system that it comes with is taking. and as for you only being able to hold only 900 songs your songs are probably longer than 3 or 4 mins or you have used the space for something else like a video or podcast. as for returning it i wouldnt advise it because i dont think its a problem with the actual ipod. just fool around with it and go on itunes and see what it says most of your space has been used. hope this helps

because the ipod memory is also docked from the amount of memory of the ipod, so the stuff that comes on the ipod like the lists pictures when you first buy it is subtracted from the 8gb, it's not 8gb exactly, you can't tell exactly the amount of songs it will hold, each song is different member.

The capacity is an estimate based on what type of file compression you use, most likely 128kbs, if your songs are encoded at higher bit rates then they take up more space, plus if you have video/pics etc., that also takes up space on the IPODs hard drive.

well it depends if you have any movies or pictures or videos on it. If you have any of those then that is why because they also take up space. If not then yes definetly (sorry about the spelling) return it for a better deal.

because songs have different amounts of mega bytes some have like 5 some can have 20 others can have 10 1000 songs is an estimate it is not exactly 1000 songs

size is relative in computers. u cant have the whole 8 gb because the file system uses some of it. usually 900 songs means 900 low quality 128 kb/s 3 min songs, its just an advertising gimick.

If you have album covers or pictures they tend to take up a lot of space on the ipod
