Can an amplifier loose power?

How can I repair my amplifier's power switch?

  • The power switch on my Marshall amplifier used to click when I turned it on and off. Then it went flimsy for awhile and then it just stopped working. I took off the power switch to see what was wrong and 2 little gold hooks fell out. I tried to mount them back inside the amp but they wouldn't stay. What should I do??

If you can't make sense out of the pieces (which are probably broken anyway), you're better off buying a replacement component. Just make sure the power and voltage rating is appropriate. Take the bad switch in to a Radio Shack, or some auto parts stores, or you could look it up on the Internet. Mouser sells components, you could try there. But there are LOTS of places you could go. Good luck!

Unplug the amp, cut the two wires off the broken switch, strip an inch of insulation off each wire, tightly twist them together and cover them well with 6 layers of electrical tape. Free and easy. For extra credit solder the wires or twist a wire nut on them before using the tape.
