If the smudges are from greasy fingers, then you can try wetting a soft sponge or a piece of soft cotton cloth with distilled white vinegar and gently wipe down the chrome side of the iPod. Vinegar can safely be used on chrome. If the smudges are really scratches, there is really nothing that works, at least not very well. Even many of the best iPod cleaners, most which are for the front screen of the iPod, don't really work and can even create more scratches on the back of your iPod.
