Any iPod cord that is newer than the 2nd Generation full-size iPod (released July 2002), with the exception of the Shuffle models, will work with one another for data transfers. Some iPods will not necessarily charge via the cables (i.e., 3rd Generation full-size iPod will not charge via a USB cable, only via the Firewire cable); however, no damage should occur. Currently, if the cable fits the connector, it should work. This could change as future models are released, but this is the main reason Apple went to the universal Dock Connector, so the cables are 'universal'.
