How to change m4a into mp3?

What is the current preferred format for audo; mp3 or m4a?

  • I was ripping all of my CDs last year and did some research and it looked like everyone was going to m4a instead of mp3. What is the best way to do it? It seems to me that m4a is also a way to do video for Ipods and cell phones. m4a increases file size and then if you use "optimize for voice" and change the settings to 168kbs or more you increase the file size tremendously. What is the current standard?

    .M4A is the unprotected iTunes proprietary file extension. .M4P is the protected one. Both are MPEG-4 files but have to be converted for anything other than iPods and iTunes. .MP3 is more or less generic in that it's compatible with both Windows Media Player and iTunes.
