Downloading Illegal Music?
-
How bad do you think it is to download illegal music? Not like the music is illegal, but like getting it for free when you should be paying for it?

Answer:
It doesn't much matter what any of us thinks. Juries are imposing multi-million dollar fines and the courts are upholding them. ISPs have all the cyber evidence needed to prove a case in court. Canada is close to imposing a surtax on devices, a big part of which will go to recovering some of what the artists and publishers believe they've lost due to piracy. Then there's the whole virus issue. One can buy a lot of music with the $129 a pop it costs for virus removal. A nasty virus can also cost a lot more in terms of the other files lost if not backed up. People think that because technology makes it possible or because "everybody else does it," it must be okay to do it. Too many people also think that by virtue of having bought an iPod that they may or may not have been able to afford, they've spent enough money and should get free content. That's kind of like thinking that because you own a TV, free cable is your god-given right. Like a TV, if you don't have anything to play or listen to on it, there's no point in even having an iPod. The content is the reason to have an iPod. The iPod is not the reason to have content even if it means stealing it. Then the number of users who can't be bothered to back up their content. It's such a big deal to have the content that people are willing to risk the court fines, the viruses and even exposing all of their computer files for all the world to see, yet not important enough to back it up. Some people just don't have much common sense as questions here everyday attest. The comment about if it was such a big deal, they would do something about it; they are. Read other questions here every day. "They" may not have caught up with everybody yet, but everybody pays one way or the other.

BIllions of people do it. For instance >> Limewire, the program the worlds largest file sharing program on the net. Movies, games, songs, even WoW (world of warcraft) when you first install limewire, click on do not let me download copyrighted music ect. then you can download music that real authors allow you to download for free, don't upgrade to limewire pro, caz i don't see a difference (well only because of different download speeds but yea) millions of Americans do this but only about 2% get caught, (if the downloaded copyrighted songs) if they do get caught well, they'll be sued by the author/band. For however much. Hoped I helped on your decision or whatever lol BTW limewire isn't illegal, it's just what you do with it is. Like downloading copyrighted things, that's illegal but sharing a freeware music piece of software, that's not illegal. :D BE CAREFULL :D :D :D :D :D See ya! email me at [email protected]
To be absolutely honest, its not bad. Music artists make millions anyway, millions take their music for free. The world has evolved, so evolve with it.

For every band that makes millions selling their albums and touring, there are hundreds of bands whose members work full-time jobs to help pay the bills. Those are the musicians that people are cheating by illegally downloading music, because people are such big "fans" that they can't live without the band's songs but are too cheap to pay for it. Anyone who has been stiffed by an employer knows how cr*ppy it feels to be cheated. Artists feel the same way. As far as how bad it is, how about $650,000 or $2,000,000? These are two of the latest verdicts/fines against people for illegal music downloads. The record labels are gearing up for another round of lawsuits for illegal downloads. Wouldn't want to be one of those schmucks using sites like Limewire when the lawyers start tracing IP addresses ...
It's wrong, that's for sure, but honestly, i think of it like... a gift, they give me a song, that was possibly bought somewhere down the line.

If it's on the internet, it's not illegal ;) Besides, they make enough from concerts to live well. They're rich whether we download or not, ever seen that ep of South Park "Christian Rock Hard"? It tells all.

The people who uploaded the songs are at fault. How was I supposed to know that I need to pay for it? *wink wink* Just don't download thousands of songs.
