Can you remotely deauthorize itunes?

IPod/ITunes: How to deauthorize a PC I no longer have.?

  • I totally screwed up and didn't deauthorize my old PC before setting up my new laptop. These are work PCs and they took the old computer (I can't get it back even if I wanted to). The library transferred just fine with all of my downloaded and purchased music, but now when I try to sync my ipod, I get an error that says I don't have the correct permissions and my purchased music will not be synced. Is there any way around this? I am not ipod or computer savvy so the answer needs to be very low-tech…and preferrably not "call apple support", which will cost me $30/hour.

  • Answer:

Just send an email to Apple's iTunes tech support and tell them that you want to de-authorize and old computer you no longer have, and authorize your new computer. Tell them you have all of your old music files, but you dont have a backup of your DRM database. And tell them that you cant get your iPod to synch with your new computer. Tell them you no longer have any access to your old machine. Apple will clear out your iTunes authorized computers and devices list, tell you how to properly re-install iTunes and authorize your new computer, and tell you the software to run on your computer with your iPod attached to change the computer your iPod can be attached to. They will also tell you what commands to click on in iTunes once your new computer is properly authorized to re-build your DRM database properly so all of your music works fine.
