Why is my serial usb cable not working?

Midi to USB cable not working.?

  • I bought some cheap little Midi to USB cable in the hopes that I could record my piano, but I can't figure out how to make it work. I have Windows 7, the cable was bought on Amazon, from HDE. My computer doesn't even recognize the Midi cable, although it makes the connect/disconnect noise when I plug it in and unplug it. The driver was supposedly installed when I first plugged it in, and I've been using it in the same USB port on my computer the entire time. The cable lights up, so I know it's at least functional, the Midi cables are connected correctly (out to in, in to out), and the device on the cable lights up when I play notes on the piano it's connected to. For some reason, my computer won't recognize the device as a possible input, so it won't show up in Audacity, and I have no way of even telling if the computer is receiving any input from the cable, other than the fact that Windows makes the noises when I plug it in and unplug it. Any help is appreciated, thanks!

  • Answer:

Try going to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > (under the Sound icon) Manage Audio Devices and right-click on the device you're recording with and set it as the default device.
