How do you get your music onto itunes on a mac computer?

I have all of my music on my mac, but don't know how to get them on itunes so I can transfer them onto my ipod. I've never used a mac before until now. It's so confusing. Please help.

>First, open iTunes. >Then, go to Edit>Preferences>Advanced>and make sure that "Keep iTunes Music Folder Organized" and "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to Library" are checked and click "OK". You do this to make sure that your music won't be randomly organized. >Select "Library" in the left hand column of the iTunes main screen. >Locate the source files (the folders with the songs in them). >Drag and drop the source files into the iTunes Library interface. >Now the music is in iTunes.
