Why is my cable box causing interference?

If I split my cable tv signal will static interference come backwards up the line to ruin my box?

  • If we hook up another tv in another part of the house and I split the sifnal from just begore it goes into my box, then run about 50 feet to the tv will there be a back wash of sorts of electricity back to the box? Or does it all depend onm the quality of the splitter and the cable?

  • Answer:

I doubt if it will ruin your box, but there is a little truth your statement in that there may be more static due to lowered signal level (each box or TV has a 75 ohm terminator resistor, so there will be a loss of signal level with a splitter). One option if that happens is to get a distribution amplifier so both signals are boosted to their original level. This amplifier won't work if you have cable internet, as a simple amplifier will block the outbound PC to cable office signals. And, a cheap cable amplifier will introduce its own noise into the signal. So I would try the splitter first, and not install the new cable into the wall unless it works correctly- then you could return the cable and splitter if they didn't work for you.
