What cable do i need to connect my laptop to my tv?

What cable do I need to connect my Plasma TV to my laptop computer?

I know I need HDMI on the TV end and a VGA cable on the laptop end. I've narrowed down my choices to a $10 cable on ebay and this $40 adapter from an online vendor. I'm not sure why one is powered and the ebay cable isn't. Is it because it converts an analog VGA signal to a digital HDMI signal? Which one would do the job? I just need it for basic web surfing on my TV. The cable is a SCAM. There is no way a single cable can take VGA and give you HDMI (or the reverse). Buy the adaptor.
