Answer:
Probably not much it depends a lot on how the signal is getting to your set now. In digital, the resolution is set by the video, not by the TV or any cord. If you are using RF (coax) now, you are delivering the same signal from the cable box you would if you used HDMI. The only difference is the HDMI doesn't have to go through the TV's tuner. If all the ones and zeros get to your set, you are getting the same picture and quality no matter how they got there. If your current connection to the cable box is with component cables (Red, Green, Blue) you *may* see an improvement. The dirty little secret cable and satellite companies don't tell you is that they compress the signals to make room for more channels on their systems. Compression removes detail. Any compression has to be done at the cable head end and is pretty much set by the time it gets to your TV. That's why HDMI won't make much difference in this case.

High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is a compact audio/video interface for transmitting uncompressed digital data. It is a digital alternative to consumer analog standards which are the red yellow and white RCA type connectors used in the past. HDMI implements the EIA/CEA-861 standards, which define video formats and waveforms, transport of compressed, uncompressed, and LPCM audio, auxiliary data, and implementations of the VESA EDID.[2][3] HDMI supports, on a single cable, any uncompressed TV or PC video format, including standard, enhanced, high definition and 3D video signals; up to 8 channels of compressed or uncompressed digital audio; a Consumer Electronics Control (CEC) connection; and an Ethernet data connection. That is a lot of mumbo jumbo for, it gives you digital sound and picture which means better quality on your HDTV. Incidently don't go by the most expensive HDMI cable thinking it will give you the best bang for your buck. Repeated tests have concluded there is not difference in the quality of the picture and sound between using an inexspensive HDMI cable vs. a really expensive HDMI cable. Save your money for thos cable bills.
