Direct TV Remote Help?

My Direct TV remote won't change the volume, or turn on/off the reciever. I have a Sony flatscreen and i'm clueless as to what i have to do. it says i have to program the remote in TV Mode in order for the TV buttons to work but they ask for a brand....and idk the brand of the remote? anyone have any ideas as to fixing the remote? i just wanna be able to change the volume with the direct tv remote instead of the sony one.

they are not asking for the brand of the directv remote they are asking for the brand of the tv.follow these instructions.on your directv remote. 1 press menue 2 press select 3 scroll down to parental favs&setup 4 press select 5 scroll down to remote 6 press select 7 on right hand side look for tv & scroll down to it 8 now scroll down thru the tvs untill you come to your brand 9press select now punch in the numbers untill you find one that turns the tv off when it does the remote should work ok.
