How do I remove the base from my LCD TV?

Is the base of an LCD TV not stable enough?

• We're planning to get a flatscreen HD LCD TV. Phew, that's a lot of abbreviations. Anyway, the salesman said that most people get wall mounts because the bases that come with flat LCD TVs are usually not stable enough that if someone bumps into the TV, it could fall. Therefore he recommends we get it mounted. Mounting has an additional cost, which really isn't much, but I'm just wondering if he's trying to get us to spend more. Also, my issue with mounting it is that if we move apartment, or if I want to move it into another room, it'd be hard to do so. Are there alternative ways to support a flat screen without having to use a wall mount?

  These sets are pretty stable. I don't know about all brands, but several Sonys I've seen come with a strap that prevents the set from falling forward. The sets weigh sixty to eighty pounds, so it takes quite a lot to tip them. The bigger danger is kids. They should be mounted up and away out of reach of sticky fingers and crayons.
