Connecting tv to DVD hifi System?

Connecting dvd, vcr, tv with rf modulator?

  • I had a tv and a vcr hooked up with a coaxial cable. I need to add a dvd. So i bought a rf modulator. Now I have the coaxial cable from the cable system to the vcr 'in', a coaxial cable from the vcr 'out' to the rf 'ant in', the yellow, red, and white connections hooked up between the dvd and the rf modulator, and a coaxial cable between the rf out and the tv in. I can't get the dvd to work. When I turn the tv on 3 (the rf modulator is set to 3), I don't get the blue screen of the philips dvd player, and i don't get playback if there is a dvd in the drive. Only static. I tried other channels on the tv, nothing helps. (I hooked the dvd up directly to another tv, and it works). I called Philips and they suggested it is a problem with the rf modulator or the tv, and they can't help me. Suggestions?

I agree with gunshow's answer for the most part, the RF modulator is redundant in this scenario since there is already an RF modulator built into the VCR. The only correction I would make is that when plugging your DVD player into the line inputs on your VCR, you would select "line" input on your VCR (not channel 2 or 3) whenever you wish to view a DVD. The TV would remain on channel 3. If you cannot locate the line or video input on your VCR, you can usually get to this by going channel down until you get below channel 1, where it should change to line in.

Not sure if you needed the modulator. this is how I do it 1 connect your cable or antenna to your VCR. 2 connect your VRC to your TV coaxial cable. 3 connect your DVD player to your VCR using red, yellow and white AV jacks. Out from DVD and in on the VCR. Then you need to have the VCR on and program channels on the VCR. Turn to channel 3 or 2 on the VCR and this will give you the DVD player.

The modulator sometimes has a red light on it that indicates whether it is receiving signal. See if it lights up. If it does, the modulator and DVD are ok, but you may have a problem with the TV input. If the red light doesn't come on, your modulator is at fault.
