Why do I have to turn the sound way up when watching DVDs. Regular TV and VCR shows can be heard clearly.?
-
I have a hard time hearing spoken voices on DVDs over the music. I have to turn the sound up almost to maximum to hear most DVDs. I've tried every audio setting my TV offers, including the surround sound and no surround sound, movies, WOW, etc. Do I have to purchase a surround sound system to hear DVDs?

Answer:
Sounds like you are trying to watch 5:1 or better movies on a stereo television. The Dynamic range of surround sound is much higher than for TV or VCR. Have you noticed that TV commercials are much louder than the TV shows? That is because they use compression on Commercials to limit dynamic range and put more sound in the mid-range. TV & VCR's have a more limited dynamic range and so they are going to sound louder. To get the most out of your movie watching experience get a home theater sound system, This will not completely eliminate the TV commercial issue but will moderated the difference in surround TV watching and VCR tape playback. Some News programs will probably still sound louder.

This isn't really an answer, but I have had the same problem with certain DVD players. Since purchasing an inexpensive home theater system, I haven't had any problems.

Look on your DVD players remote. There is probably a volume control on there which effects the player.

it could be that the line u use to connect the dvd player is crap. try changing some setting on the dvd player it self
