Why does the sound keep cutting out on my new digital tv?

Why does my TV reception keep cutting out though it indicates good signal strength?

  • I'm a college student. I can't afford to spend a bunch of money on satellite TV and I'm against it in that I'll be paying for 125 channels and I'll watch about 10 altogether, 3 most of the time. So to be frugally minded, I picked up an antenna and a converter box for my 12 year old TV. I get my antenna pointed in the right direction and it picks up fine! I get about a 70% signal strength. It works for about 5 minutes, but all of a sudden it'll start cutting out. So I check my signal strength and it still says anywhere from 50-70%. If it's got such great signal strength, there's no reason for the picture to be choppy, right? Because with some of my other channels, I get anywhere from 40-55% and they're good. Then others do the previously explained scenario. Why does it do that? Is it my converter box? It can't be the antenna, can it? Converter box: RCA DTA800B1 Antenna: Antenna Pros AX-909-G2 Side note: The weather has been fluctuating as far as temperature is concerned. Yesterday afternoon, it was 80 degrees and tonight, it's going to be 36. Can this be a factor?

Here's a good thread on your question. Not as easy as ">50%" = good signal. http://www.highdefforum.com/local-hdtv-info-reception/98525-signal-strength-variables.html

Other answers

There may be a problem with the connection to the tv. Digital OTA signals are either on or off. Try peaking your antenna again.
