Why am I not getting any sound through my TV from computer?

Computer hook up to TV audio?

  • Hello, I hooked up my PC to my TV a while ago with a DVI cable, and I've been using some crappy computer speakers for sound. Im getting a sound bar for my TV so i want the audio for the PC to come through the TV Speakers so that i can hear the audio out of the sound bar. I have a headphone jack on my TV, but i dont have audio output. Can i just use a long AVX Male cable to hook up the TV Headphone jack to the computer? or am i going to have to buy some cables?

  • Answer:

Not the headphone jack--that's an output from the TV, not an input. Check your TV's user manual carefully for some type of audio input that's intended for applications like this. For example, you'll usually find a pair of red/white RCA audio input jacks adjacent to one of the HDMI inputs. That's perfect if your PC has an HDMI output--just use an adapter at the PC's headphone jack to convert to RCA and connect the adapter to those RCA jacks. Connect video to the HDMI jack and select that input with the TV's remote. Your TV may have such an auxiliary audio input connector that will similarly be active when you select the DVI input. ---------------- Followup: alternately, consider going directly from the PC headphone jack, through an adapter, to the input of the sound bar.
