Do I need a dtv converter box for each TV I have?

How do I know if I need to buy a DTV converter box for my TV or not?

  • If it turns out I don't need it, I don't want to have wasted the money on it.

  • Answer:

If you are connected to a cable or satellite network, you will not need a converter box. If you use an antenna here in the US and you can receive the digital channels now on your TV, then you will not need a converter box. If you do not see the digital channels now from your antenna, they you are more than likely going to need the converter box. All digital channels are labeled on screen of a digital TV with their sub-channel designations i.e. 7-1 or 7.1 Also, a digital TV will display "DTV" when you use your remote's display, info or recall button to display information about the current tuned channel if it is digital.

If you're hooked up to cable or satellite, you don't need it. If you live somewhere where cable isn't available and you get it through an antenna on your roof, then you need one.

Unless your signal is being received via a Satellite Dish or Cable Company then you may need a converter box , but if you have a newish TV , it may have a built-in digital tuner which means you wont need the converter box.
