I don't have cable but I still want to watch basic channels, do I need a converter box?
-
I just moved out of my parents' house where they had digital cable and HDTV and all that fancy stuff so I don't really know what I am doing. Now, I don't want to pay for cable but I still want to watch the news and programs on network channels (NBC, ABC, etc.) Do I need to purchase one of those converter boxes to make my TV work or is there something else I might be doing wrong? Right now, I just get a bright blue screen. All I did was plug in the TV to the wall, no cable cord or anything. Is the cable cord only needed if you have cable channels or do I need one anyway? Thanks for any information you have!

You may be able to get away with a digital antenna. They have decent cheap ones at Radio Shack and Best Buy. Try that, and ask advice of the salespeople there!

You need an antenna. If your TV is an HDTV and it has an ATSC tuner, then you are golden. If your TV is an old 4x3, then you need the converter box and an antenna. Do not connect the TV to the outlet in the wall. Start antenna shopping here http://antennaweb.org/aw/welcome.aspx Oh, and dirty little secret... Your picture will be of higher quality than the folks cable. Less compression.

Many appartments offer free basic cable or may even have an antenna - Ask the manager. If NOT, you definitely need an antenna. Depending on what TV you have, you may also need a converter box. Check www.antennaweb,org

If you have an older crt tv, you will need a converter box and an antenna. Both available at Radio Shack as previously mentioned. You don't need cable as you don't want it.
