How can I fix my old tube TV tuning?

Vertical line problem on my tube tv. How can I fix it?

  • I got a 13yr old Zenith tube tv and one day the tv pixels went out other than 3/8 strip going across the middle of the screen, that will display picture in the 3/8 strip, tv also has sound, I was told the problem is called Vertical Line Problem. Looking to see how it can be fixing? if there one main issue to fix this problem, like replacing a main board? How can I fix this?

  • Answer:

You've lost your horizontal deflection, or most of it. Basically, it's an oscillator and amplifier, most likely built into an integrated circuit, with its output coupled to the deflection yoke around the neck of the picture tube. For someone adept at troubleshooting and repairing those old sets, it's not a major or expensive problem. But if you can't get that sort of help for free, paying for a professional repair is probably not a great idea. The money would be better invested in a modern flatscreen. 13 years on an old Zenith is pretty good. My last one only made it to 7 years.

Replace the vertical output IC (unless it has obvious bad solder joints, in which case try resoldering them first) and the 100ufd 25 - 35 volt pump-up capacitor.

warning............keep BRIGHTNESS volume as low as.possible.........this burns crt phosphors. if this strip is horizontal......trouble is in VERTICAL OUTPUT. If strip is vertical......trouble is on COUPLING CAPACITOR OF HORIZONTAL YOKE. vertical output is an IC connected to vertical yoke.
