About TV licensing and whether have to pay or not.?
-
I have a very old TV, lost the remote control and soon my sky subscription will end as I have ended it myself and will be able to watch nothing. Not even the free channels because I cannot progarmme the tv to show me the free channels once the sky is cut off. I will be left with a blue blank screen. I have no intention to buy a tv right now. So I wont be able to watch any channels. But I will have a tv in the room but no channels which I will be able to see once I get cut off from sky. Will I still have to pay the tv license? Or will I have to get rid of the tv completely in order to cancel tv licence. If I decide to buy another tv in the future without sky channels I will inform them but in the meantime can I cancel it once my sky ends? What is the process in informing them to cancel tv licence what do I say I have a tv but it does not work or I have tv but cannot view any channels so wish to cancel? I cant be bothered to throw it out now because its huge and heavy I live in the 4th floor wihtout a lift. Will I get into trouble if they see a tv in the room but they will be able to see it I cannot watch anything on it.

Answer:
If you're not using your TV to watch programmes as they're being broadcast then you don't need a licence. So if you use your TV for watching videos or DVDs or for computer games then you're fine. In practice, the TV is still capable of receiving programmes as they're being broadcast until the digital switchover occurs in your area, so to be absolutely safe disconnect the aeriel lead from the unit. Note that if you have a computer and watch programmes from any tv channel as they're being broadcast (such as BBC iPlayer or any other similar services) then you still must have a TV licence. If none of that applies to you, then you should write to TV Licencing to let them know why you no longer need a TV licence.
