When I switch to digital TV will I still need my current rooftop aerials?
-
Daughter's nagging me to make the switch. Any suggestions on the best and cheapest way to do it?

Answer:
If you want cheapness, you wont get premium channels, apart from BBC,ITV,CH4/5. Terrestrial freeview, using a digibox connected to your TV, as already recommended, is the best option. Your aerial may need replacing. You need to check out reception in your area. If you are buying a new TV, you should consider getting one with built-in digital. Cable or satellite are other options. There are many free satellite channels on Sky, as well as pay packages. Check out the links below.

no, if you have got a freeview box and are using it, and the picture is good, then no you don't need to change aerial ( only about 10% of household will ). If you haven't got freeview then checkout www.freeview.co.uk/home to see if you can get it, some areas have to wait till 2012!! wg

Cheapest is freeview, just the cost of the box and installation. you will still need your aerials for that If you go for sky or virgin then you wont need your aerials but should probably keep them anyway just in case you should change mind in future

Freeview is the cheapest way to go digital. A separate set-top box will work with any type of television and they start at about £20. Depending on your location, you can receive up to 80 TV and radio channels. If you are in a decent reception area, you won't even need to change your aerial (we have a 15 year old aerial and we can get 72 channels, crystal clear). The only way to do away with your aerial completely, is if you go to satellite or cable (very expensive and generally 200 channels of total rubbish...).

Well what is cheap depends on the area you leave and what other services you use at home like phone and Internet. Also what package you wanna go for. Best thing is to call all major suppliers and ask them to send you an information pack. decide what channels you wanna connect to and decide what is best for your need. you don't need aerial with digital TV anyway.

The cheapest way to go is definitely Freeview. Apart from the initial cost of the box (as low as about £17 in Tesco) it's as it says in the name - FREEview. You do need your aerial for that, but there are no subscription costs. You could go through Sky or Virgin, which have good ranges of channels, but you pay for it - neither need your aerial as Sky is a dish and Virgin is cable. But you pay a monthly subscription for them.
