How can I get reception for free local TV channels in rural Northern Alberta?

We live on a farm north of Edmonton, near Clyde. We don't want satellite TV but would like the free local channels. We've tried indoor antennas but none worked. We've been told our area has very poor reception. What can we do, if anything, to get "farmer" TV?
