When purchasing a new tv, does 60 HZ vs 120 Hz REALLY matter?

DVD frame rate question?

  • I have a Sony Blu-ray connected to an LG "120 Hz" TV. My question is: What is the best setting for films? My 1st choice is 24 fps. Pro: Native frame rate of most films on DVD and can display properly on my new TV. Con: Fewer frames per second looks more juttery than I am used to. My 2nd choice is 60 fps no matter what. I believe it works by repeating every so many frames. Pro: how I am used to seeing films on a regular old CRT TV. Looks livelier. Con: Technically an old-school adaptation for television, not how the film was intended to be displayed in a theater. My 3rd choice is to output 24 fps from the player and utilize "Real Cinema" on the TV. Pro: I'm not sure. Seems smoother than true 24 fps, but not as artificially smooth as "TrueMotion". Con: I'm not sure. Doesn't seem as natural as 60 fps. Seems like it creates new frames artificially. Any opinions? Is it dumb to use 60 Hz pulldown when my fancy dancy new TV is capable of true 24 fps? In your opinion, which will produce the most natural and headache-free picture? Thanks.

  • Answer:

Choice one for sure. About the only reason (IMHO) to get a 120hz set, is to watch movies at 24 frames per second, and avoid the typical 3:2 pull down. 24hz divides evenly into 120hz. - 17R3W
