Why is my TV screen green?

Why does my 20" TV screen sometimes get green spots?

  • When I'm watching my TV, if there's a period of time where the screen is white for a long time (let's say there's a snow scene in a movie), the white seems to make some of my screen become green-ish. The green fades away once the white is gone...and it only does this during prolonged periods of white, so to speak.

  • Answer:

"Many [televisions] use a metal plate near the front of the tube to focus the electron beams from the back. This plate, the shadow mask, can pick up strong external fields and from that point produce discoloration on the display." Basically, the metal plate that focuses the electron beams gets magnetized. That's why CRT monitors have a degauss function.

you probably have something next to it that causes that. My tv will have that in the corner with the speaker gets too close or some metal object. try moving things away from it.

You CRT has become magnetized. By turning your set OFF, wait 1 minute, then turn it ON, it should demagnetize itself. The CRT is surrounded by a coil for such a purpose. If that doesn't do it, you need to have a technician use a coil to demagnetize the CRT completely. Or, if you have a round magnet about 12" in diameter, then you can do it yourself.

It usually means your picture tube is going.. you will need a new tv eventually. One of my tvs have done that for about 4 years on/off now and still work fine.
