Will I still need an antenna to get local channels on a digital tv???
-
In California, I have a basic tv. I also have a ghastly antenna sitting on top of the tv. I don't subscribe to any tv service. I like my local channels and my ghastly antenna helps me see them reasonably clearly. My 1st question is, if I buy a digital tv right now, will I be able to watch local channels without the antenna right now??? 2nd question is, will I need an antenna after 2/09 on a digital tv to watch local channels???

Answer:
>if I buy a digital tv right now, will I be able to watch local channels without the antenna right now? No, you will still need an antenna. The same kind of antennas that are used for the old analog TV. >will I need an antenna after 2/09 on a digital tv to watch local channels??? You will still need an antenna. Digital TV broadcasts use the same frequency bands as the old analog broadcasts. You do not have to buy a new TV. A cheap converter box can be placed between your antenna that allows them to receive digital tv. If you don't like the way your current TV antenna looks, why not just buy a better looking antenna? Take a look at the Winegard SS-3000, one of the best indoor antennas.

I'm confused. Or you are. Or maybe both of us. You receive your TV signal via antenna right? That a completely separate issue from the kind of physical TV set you have. So I think the answers are... 1) No, you will still need the antenna to pick up the signal and transmit it to the TV or you will have to get cable or some other subscription service that carries your local channels. 2) No one really knows. It's my understanding that even if everything does go 100% one way or the other there are converters you buy so that you aren't forced to get a new TV. You'll still need an antenna, cable subscription, etc in order to watch TV but you can buy a converter instead of an whole new TV.

Don't know if this helps but I heard that there is going to be a change in broadcast standards where all local channels will have to broadcast digital, no more analog. Which means no antennas will work. Again I heard this from a TV commercial advertising for cable so I don't know how much truth there is too it. You may want to call your local TV station and find out.
