Free Cable TV When I Moved In.?
-
Hello! I just moved into a new apartment a few weeks ago and I hooked up my TV to watch the local news and ended up having cable TV including HBO, Cinemax, etc. Cable TV is not included in my rent. I asked a few friends (a police man and a lawyer) their opinions on it and they both agreed that I couldn't get in trouble for the cable company's mistake and that since there is no contract I hold no liability. They both told me to play dumb when asked about it. I'm very worried about this. It has been on for over 2 weeks now and it's still on. Should I report it? Has anyone else experienced this? How long did the cable remain on? Did you get caught? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Yeah, I have, when I moved in to a new apartment years ago I plugged in the cable for antenna and whoa la, it was free cable t.v., so I viewed it for about two years, until one day it just went out, so I went to see a wicked manager I had and he said his went out too, but he called the cable company and they repaired it but then he started asking me all kinds of questions, and in a few day's my wife said she saw a cable guy putting a lock on the box outside our apartment, and after that we didn't have it anymore, until I finally ordered it with payment, like 40.00 a month, point is he reported me and they came and disconnected it and locked the box.
Great worker
You have the knowledge that what you are doing is stealing service. What you do about that is a conscious issue between you and the Lord. I have worked for several cable companies over the years. I do know that the cable company would much rather take you on as a customer than take you to court. Two weeks is not long enough to worry. The few weeks of unauthorized service may be viewed as a promo. Typically what they will do is send someone out in a few weeks to disconnect the service. They keep the crews busy hooking up and making paying customers happy first. Disconnects take a back seat until the backlog gets big. The person who comes out will likely ask if you want to be signed up. During an audit, units that are hooked up that are disconnected are noted. Then a few days later another audit may be done. The persons who hook themselves back up are the ones that end up being brought to court.

Legally, the cable company can accuse you of stealing because you are receiving a product without paying for it. Would they actual do that? Probably not. Worst case, they turn it off one day. That is what happens to most people. If it doesn't bother you, then ride it out and milk it. If it really bothers you, then call and pay for the services. Within the next 3-6 months, it will be turned off. Cable companies know.
