How do you record a TV show from your VCR?

How do I record a show on tv using a blank tape and a VCR?

I know I'm stuck in the 90's, but we just have basic television and a VCR, and I'm not sure how to record a show. The "record" light will come on if I press record while having the tv on the "movie-watching" mode, so I turned the channel to a show and recorded it for a few minutes. But when I went back to the "movie-watching" mode, rewound the tape, and played it, it was just blank or had the snow, or whatever you call it. Help?

u have to make sure the VCR is program to the TV basic channels. so when u record a show on a channel, the VCR has to be on the same channel.
