Is an indoor HD antenna good?

What is the best type of indoor HD antenna to use?

  • I have Dish Network for my HD service, however my local channels are not available in HD. Obviously I want to see all the major networks in HD if possible.

  • Answer:

An amplified indoor antenna that actually has a power supply (cord or wall wart) that connects to the electrical outlet in your home. I have seen some say they are amplified but they really mean that the antenna has more gain that a standard dipole (rabbit ear antenna). Radio Shack did have one but check around. Also if you install an outdoor antenna with a lightning arrestor you can add a certain kind of outdoor antenna to some dishes used by Dish Network. MAKE SURE your Dish Network box has an HD tuner built in (ATSC tuner).

The Zenith Silver Sensor and Radio Shack double bowtie antennas are good for many people. However you have to be in a pretty good position relative to the broadcast tower for them to work for you. (Less than 20 miles, good line of sight.) Go to antennaweb.org, enter your information, and see if these antennas will work for you.
