What's the difference between LED and CCFL?

Should i buy a LED tv or LCD ,whats the difference?

  • i just want to buy a new TV but im confused with whats out there.....

  • Answer:

They are nearly the same. Both have a liquid crystal display screen. The only major difference between the two is that older or less expensive sets use a fluorescent lamp for the backlight, while an "LED" set uses a bank of light emitting diodes. The LED backlighting uses less electrical power than the fluorescent lamp. There are two versions, "edge" lighting and "full matrix." Edge-lit sets can be very thin. Full matrix sets allow for "local dimming," which can bring improved contrast in specific areas of the screen. However, don't look for a *major* difference in picture quality. The HD picture on an "LED" set will be difficult to distinguish from a very good conventional LCD set.

LED refers to the type of LCD back lighting. There are two types: Edge lit and full array back light with local dimming. Edge is the cheaper of the two and for that reason the most popular. Edge lit screens have the LED lighting on the edge of the screen which through the use of mirrors lights the entire screen. Full array lighting puts the LED behind the screen and provides the brightest, best, most uniform picture available. Local dimming makes for sharper blacks and better contrast. For price comparison, if I were you, I would compare a best quality Samsung (edge lit) with a similar sized Sony HX-909 (full array with local dimming). If you can do that it will make it easier to decide if the extra cost of the full array screen is worth the superior picture it will provide. I believe LG also makes a full array set and there are probably a few others available. I did just that a short time ago and wound up spending the extra money for the Sony. Time will tell me whether or not I made a good decision.

LCD and LED TV's are quite similar.. LED TV's are slimmer, (who cares), a different type of backlighting, but have the same slow response problems as LCD.. Off to the sides viewing can be poor...and usually LED costs more..Go to a good store like Best Buy and walk off to the sides and see the saturation and color change. Now try that on a plasma. The plasma has a wide viewing angle up to 170 degrees.! However, thet are usually 40 inches in size or more.. Take a good close look at all, and you will find what you like, if you do not need a large plasma..(Beware of the 'refresh rates' advertised.) They really do not fix the slow response time.
