Is there any online free TV channels there?

Free View TV channels?

  • I am living in a flat in Croydon. As per free view website, I should be getting all free view digital channels in my post code area. However I have trouble getting free view channels like C4, FIVE, ITV. Most of the time I get poor signal message when I switch to those channels. My TV has in built digital tuner. There are atleast 40 apartments in my flat. I am not sure where the common arieal is located. Hence I do not have any control over the arieal. Are there any booster devices available which could help me to watch all the channels? If available, kindly provide me the place where I can get one and the specifications I should go for? Will any indoor antennae help me?

Hello. As you live in Croydon, you should (but clearly not) be getting all the signals for all the channels exceptionally well from the transmitter a few miles away. It is more than likely that the communal aerial needs a major upgrade which is why you can't get most of them. You might like to consider something called Freesat which a free-to-air satellite service which covers most if not all the freeview channels. I have copied a link to the offical website which is http://www.freesat.co.uk/ and will explain all things about this service and what you may well be able to receive. If you do decide to purchase one,I strongly recommend Humax. Its more expensive but I've had personal experience of their quality hence the recommendation. If your flats are run by the council I would suggest you have a chat with them to see if and when you will be getting an upgrade. If the flats are run by a housing association or are all private ones,I suggest you contact the powers-that-be that oversee all the daily stuff like this. I would strongly suggest against an indoor antennae and/or a booster as well. Most of them aren't much good and could cost you more in the long-run. There is no substitute for a well-fitted freeview service! I do wish you well and hope this will go some way to helping you.For what its worth,my local council have fitted both a freeview aerial and satellite system for us tenants here in rural Spalding as our transmitter is around 40 miles away. The flatness of Lincolnshire means we get a 10/10 service on all channels. All the best. Big L 266

Bearing in mind that you are within spitting distance of the second most powerful TV transmitter in the world, you should have no trouble. The most likely problem is that the aerial and distribution leads were set up in the days of 4 channels and it downgrades the digital signal. If you live on the side of the block facing Crystal Palace, get one of these from Maplin (they've got a shop near West Croydon station). http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=115127 If you're on the south side - you'd better have words with the landlord.

Find out if your landlord is going to upgrade the aerial system,if not see about getting your own external aerial fitted as a booster or amplifier will not help at all.
