Do I need an HD converter box with an HDTV and HD antenna?
-
I have a vizio HDTV. I also have an HD indoor antenna. My question is do I still need a converter box if my television is HD or just the antenna?

Answer:
If you bought your TV within the last four years you don't need a converter box, because all new TVs have a built in tuner which receives the digital signal. So the only thing you will need is a amplified HDTV digital antenna that plugs in to the A/C which are better at receiving the digital signal then the HDTV antennas that just hook up to the TV. Also another thing people don't know is that you have to move the antenna for some channels like you would an analog antenna to get reception. Try moving the antenna to different places and scan for the digital channels and leave it in the place you get more channels and then from there you would just have to adjust the antenna for the channel that is not getting good reception.

If you have a Vizio HDTV it is more likely that the television has a built in HDTV tuner. You will only need a good antenna and you won't need to purchase a converter box. Try going into the television menu and auto scanning for your channels. If you do not get all your local channels then reposition the antenna to get a better signal until you get all your channels then rescan again. If that doesn't work it is better to get a stronger antenna. Preferably outdoor antennas are much better to receive signals.

does the TV have an internal ATSC tuner? thats what matters chances are if the TV is less than 3 years old it does, and you do not need the box all the box does is converts the ATSC signal into the NTSC format that older TVs use as long as the TV tuner is ATSC, even old antennas will get a signal in most areas, (HDTV antennas may get more, I can't say) but most of your old channels and some new ones will come thru on an HDTV jsut fine

If your tv has an internal tuner, and most HD tvs do, then you don't need a converter box, just an antenna. Do a scan for available channels according to your tv's owner's manual.

You do not need a converter box with an HDTV, because HDTVs have a built in digital tuner. To receive OTA (over-the-air) broadcasts, you need to have an HDTV antenna.
