How do I set up my set top box?

How do you connect surround sound to your digital set top box??

  • I just brought a plasma, it needed a set top box, there are 3 plugs that go into the set top box and into the tv. (red and white) There is a yellow one but that's for video. I have just brought a surround sound system too that's a dvd with an inbuilt amp. If the red and blue plugs go from the tv to the set top box how do I connect the same plugs into the dvd/amp? I know this q. makes no sense and that's because it doesn't unless you would be really cluey with this sort of thing, if this was a basic set up it would be easy, the plugs would go from the plasma straight into the dvd but there is a set top box in between. I tried to connect them from the set top to the dvd but got no sound however, the radio worked as I have the areal for that connected which shows the speakers are connected...can anyone help? Thanks :)

There are several ways to get the set up your looking for. I see you are using Red Green Blue cables for you video picture as you should for a plasma tv. The RGB cable also called component video separates the video signal into three different colors for viewing high resolution video. Another cable you could consider using is S-video it will deliver similar performance as RGB but remember these cables only carry video signals. For sound you could use either a fiber optic patch cord called an optical cord or a digital coax cable witch looks like the video cables but its the only one with orange or black on the hole it goes into. Option 3 is HDMI If your tv and other devices support this interface it carries HD video and sound on one cable. Either way you need an optical cord or a digital coax cable from the output of your source to the input of your amp to get more then 2 channel stereo. Then of course the source has to send out a multi channel signal witch most tv shows and dvd's are not. You have to make sure its recorded in 3,4,5,6,or 7 channel surround sound or in DTS. Stay away from those red, white, yellow cables if you can they are low end interfaces for a plasma tv and dvd and surround setup.

OK for TRUE DOLBY SURROUND..... Use the Optical output <OR> the Digital Audio output on your Set Top box....those stereo RCA cables are STRICTLY Stereo. If you do not find Optical or Digital connections on your DVD/Amp, it is because the DVD/Amp unit was only DESIGNED to get Dolby Surround from the DVDs and nothing Else.... That's why I like a Dedicated amp over combo units. I like Onkyo and Sony, but I was disappointed in the Onkyo dying an early death, and the parts were MORE than the unit was worth.... So I'm going to get me a YAMAHA this Christmas....Although DENON amps are good too....Of course, that's what SALEMEN say.... I'd like to hear what an AUDIO TECH would say about this..... OH! And connect your Set Top box using the HD COMPONENT CABLE.....that's the 3 Wire Video -- Red Green Blue connectors with the standard Red/White Audio connections on them. What you're using is the LOW Definition connectors -- Yellow Red and White.
