How long does it take for a plasma TV to burn in permanently?

Is plasma TV "burn in" anything to worry about?

  • Just yesterday our family bought our first flat panel TV. Its a 42 inch Insignia Plasma (made by the same company as Samsung is what I was told by the people at best buy). I've heard you should be careful about "burn in" on a plasma tv for the first 200 hours of use and not put the contrast on the tv above 50. But I've heard from other sources that "anti burn in features" in TVs will prevent this, and it is not necessary. Do I need to worry about burn in on my new tv? Should I keep the contrast low, even though the picture looks much better on a contrast setting around 70 or 80?

  • Answer:

Yes, you do need to worry about burn in, but only if you play games. For regular use, just make sure you avoid 4:3 mode for the first 500 hrs - just stretch the picture. Change the picture mode from Vivid to Standard; that's should be enough. Set the brightness and contrast as needed for best picture. Finally, don't believe everything BBuy people tell you...

It can be a concern for games and things like sports and stock tickers left on for long amounts of time.

I have a Plasma (Samsung 720p) and use it with my Xbox 360 all the time. I've had it for almost 2 years now and I can tell you what I have found. First - I avoided using the XBox for the first 200 hours. Not sure that this was necessary but I figured "what the heck". I generally just left the TV on with the burn in protection feature working (a scrolling greyscale gradient) when I was not watching it. Thus after 8 days or so I was past the 200 hours. Now I must admit - I could not help but check out the Xbox - I mean - I "had to" but I did not play it long. Now - when I use the Xbox for a long period of time there is definitely some image retention. This is NOT burn in though. It is retention. After watching regular TV for about 10 minutes it pretty much fades away. You can also use the burn in prevention feature to clear it up. It does not bother me and is rarely a problem. Yes you will see a retained image - even with all the burn in protection features turned on - even with contrast low - BUT with newer plasma displays this image will fade away quickly. It is not burn in like plasmas used to suffer. I use my Xbox a lot (both me and my sons) and I can tell you I simply do not have a problem with burn in. Oh and the picture is just so pretty :)

oh NO ! Plasma TV only 2 + 1 brand provide RELIABLE LIFE ! No 1 is Panasonic No 2 is Samsung LG still okay. ANY OTHER BRAND PLASMA IS " JUNK ". Panasonic [plasma use NEW Plasma Technologies with ANTI BURN IN circuit designs 60,000 hours life. easy burn in to Panasonic Plasma is not a issue even long hours for games.even forget to switch off TV over night with PS/XBOX . the circuit work when long hours " STILL IMAGE " on the Plasma display.it will automatically refresh the image away every 1/10000 sec. Samsung not too bad. is GOOD but Panasonic is GREAT. Samsung do not make TV ( Plasma / LCD/LED ) to any other BRAND. Many other TV maker BUY Samsung LCD/Plasma Display from Samsung as SPARE PARTS. because not all TV maker manufactures Display Panel. Insigna is local in house brand, sold in USA only. TV by small China maker. use Samsung Plasma Display Panel. ( nothings to do with designs/productions/technologies with Samsung ). very unreliable ! ADVICE ! Change to Panasonic Plasma ! worth to paid more for Quality and LONG LIFE. if not ! even how you TRY for careful for first 200 hours ( Panasonic/Samsung need not ). it still burn in in 2 to 3 years ! and total unreliable TV ! IS DESIGNS AND PRODUCTIONS / QUALITY CONTROL TECHNOLOGIES ! ONLY PANASONIC made GREAT Plasma TV. Samsung made good Plasma TV.

Not so much anymore! New Plasma TVs from manufacturers like Panasonic, Pioneer or Samsung have outstanding technologies in them to make burn-in next to impossible. You really have to be trying hard to accomplish burn-in now! Image retention is more common, but is not a concern and goes away quickly! I do recommend that you 'condition' the TV before full use. Just keep the contrast or brightness down on the TV for the first 100 hours or so and refrain from play games on it for that period as well! For my Panasonic Plasma that i have, i use the TVs darkest preset picture setting(cinema i believe). I've had it for almost a year now and the TV is perfect! As for the 'guys' at Best Buy saying that Insignia is made by Samsung...i'd take that with a grain of salt! There may be a couple components(power supply, inverter etc) that are made by third party manufacturers for which Samsung also buys from...but by no means is the actual TV made by Samsung. Insignia is a second tier brand name of Best Buy! That's why the BB 'guys' push that brand. It's more money for BB! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Best_Buy#Exclusive_Brands See this site for more info and facts: http://www.plasma-lcd-facts.co.uk/myths/screen-burn/
