Thin red line, going across the TV Screen?

On my Hitachi 51F710E TV there are thin green lines showing up across the screen. Any idea what these are?

  • Ok, the TV is the Hitachi 51F710E which is a 50 or 60-something inch flat panel HDTV. The warranty has JUST ended of course, and now there are these tiny little horizontal green lines that show up about every 2 inches down the screen. Does anyone have any idea what these are or how to fix them? I am trying to research it myself before paying a lot of money to get it fixed! Any help would be appreciated! Thank you!

  • Answer:

Yes, I know EXACTLY what it is and how to fix it yourself.... It's called Retrace lines...Your green picture tube is a little too bright and your seeing the lines that are supposed to be black and UNSEEN during the Retrace time..... It's a simple fix....you adjust the Green Screen control down to reduce the brightness.....and you do it with an UNUSED Video input (Video 2 / 3 / 4/ 5 ) since you want to adjust it with a BLACK PICTURE.... So, how do you find the screen control? You remove the front plastic panel located just below the picture screen....There should be 3 screws on the extreme left /right side of the plastic and only seen behind the panel..... But...if it's made of cloth, then it pulls straight out...you grab the extreme right or the left side, and just start pulling firmly and consistantly....they are either attached with "Super Velcro" which pops when it releases or with 2 inch pegs stuck in a rubber nipple....Both are hard to release the first time, then they get easier...you will find them normally mounted near the top and botton corners of the cloth grill..... Now, once you remove the front grille, then you remove the rectangular wood cover in the center....(if there is one there) Now you'll see 3 glass posts and one black plastic rectangle with 6 small knobs on it.....thats what you want to adjust. Now the knobs are arranged in 3 columns...each column controls ONE COLOR of picture tube....the center column is for the GREEN and that's the one you want to turn down..... Now....the one on the bottom should darken the green ---that's your screen control....the one on top should BLUR the Green picture completely and you really don't want to do that. But it's easy to refocus the green if you do.... Ok, so first, turn on your TV after opening it up, select a VIDEO INPUT that is not used, OR turn off the DEVICE connected to it. (DVD , cable or satellite box) and the picture should go black....if it's a little greenish that's ok, you're going to turn down the control to make it disappear...and no lower than that... If you turn the wrong one and it gets blurry just readjust it back until those Retrace lines are the tighest/sharpest you can get it....then try the one just above or below it..... I'll try to draw a picture.... Red Green Blue -------------------------- x x x | <<Focus control | x x x | << Screen control -------------------------- Then just put it back together......

If the warranty has just ran out ring Hitachi customer support and lay it on thick ie- you thought Hitachi was a good product and well made and they may get it done for you. I say this because I had a Panasonic VCR a few years ago that broke just after the warranty ended, they said I should have contacted them, but it was already fixed, so they sent me £40 in vouchers. So ring up nothing to loose.
