What's the best flat screen tv?

Whats the best large flat screen TV for me?

  • Im looking to buy a TV around 50" range, but i have no clue what to really look for. I want to spend less than 2 grand, but i want something nice. Any references, spec explanations, and best place to find a deal would be very much appreciated.

  • Answer:

2 grand is more than ample to get a top tier 50" HDTV. First off, you want good specs. At 50" you will see the advantages of "advanced" options, so you want them. You want 1080p. You want 120Hz or 240Hz (if you go LCD). You want Plasma (is actually better than CCFL or LED LCD). Don't get too caught up on contrast ratio specs. Those are misleading because there is not set standard by which they are measured. Go to a store and have them play something with dark scenes (The Dark Knight). Good contrast means you see shades of grey and get detail in the dark scenes. Bad contrast means you get clumps of black and lack of detail. Look to Amazon for the prices. They sometimes have some quiet sales, but sales or no sales, they quite often have the best prices. If you want to buy from an retail outlet, then look for one that will price match Amazon. With your budget and size in mind I would hands down, without the slightest flinch, recommend the following, Panasonic TC-P50G15 - 50" 1080p Plasma. This is perhaps the best TV on the market. Its $1,250 on sale right now at Amazon. There is also the "upgrade" V10 model. It will provide basically the same image quality, they are simply thinner TVs. If you don't need the thin profile, save money on the G15. And if you're seriously considering the buy right now, I'd jump on trying to get the TV now to get that price. The G10, which is essentially the same TV just bigger (the G15 is a thinner series/panel), is being sold for $1,600 right now. So the price on the G15 is a real steal of a deal frankly. If you are 100% set on an LCD though, then consider one of these, Samsung LN52B630 - 52" 1080p 120Hz LCD. A very strong option from Samsung. Its $1,779 on Amazon right now. Sony KDL-52Z5100 - 52" 1080p 120Hz LCD. $1,763 from Amazon. A very strong model from Sony. Its their second highest line/series of TV.

At that size you definately wanna go with the panasonic plasma's they are awesome especially when watching sports at that size and 1080p blue rays look sick. The 120hz and 240hz LCD's at that size will still have some blurring and that can annoy you with sports or fast action, The bigger the LCD screen the more blurring I would recommend LCD only at sizes smaller than 37 inch and must be a 120hz or 240 with plasma the 50 inch is 600hz out the box.

The Best flat panel tv you can get at 50" would be the Pioneer Kuro then the Panasonic 50" G10 model. The Pioneer Elite Kuro is the best but it's a bit more money. You can go online to Home theater Magazine and read the review on both tvs. Both tvs are Plasma and not the LCD or LED tv. This month issue list all the flat panel tvs in the market and rated as best entry level, mid range and high end. Hope this will help you out.
