My xBox won't play DVDs?

Wy doesmy xbox 360 not play dvds and says HDCP when trying to play them through my tv?

• just got an xbox 360 elite and trying to play normal dvds but so far no luck keeps saying non secure HDCP conection what ever that means. thats through the dvi to hdmi. how ever on the vga part of the tv it works fine. what is this all about????

  this is tuff to explain: hdcp is copy right protection technology built into hardware that uses hdmi and dvi ports. i.e. xbox360, setopbox, tv, av amps etc both machines have to have hdcp to work correctly . one machines scambles the signal it sends out (i.e. your xbox 360) the other machine unscrambles the signal it recieves(i.e. tv). I am guessing, that your problem is that your TV is old and is not hdcp complient. Your tv cant unscramble the signal it has received from the xbox. HDCP only works on hdmi and dvi connections. thats why you cant watch movies in your current configuration, but you can watch it if you connected it via vga. You would have the same problem with a ps3 if connected the same way. from a historical perspective. DVI was first developed, then came intel (the chip maker) designed hdcp which became part of the hdmi specification. HDMI (with hdcp) offered the movie industry a solution to provide the customer very high quality video and aduio feed - with copyright protection.
