My sharp Tv wont show my computer?

If I connect an HDMI cable from my computer to my TV will my screen show automatically?

Also, if my DVD player only had HDMI input does this mean it cannot be used as an output if my computer is connected to the DVD player? someone said it works both ways but nothing appears on the TV
