Hi there , a good friend of mine works for Sony and they inform me that after 5 years of using either Plasma LCD or LED the screen will have become much dimmer than when origionally purchased. Many stores will sell their ex display TVs at a much lower price because the screen will have almost burned out after being on for 10 hours a day seven days a week. So if you buy second hand TV it will be difficult to tell if the screen is nearly burned out unless you have a new version of the same model next to your second hand one to compare. In my opinion the TVs lifespan does not match the heafty price tag. Ask the seller of your second hand TV how long they have owned it ?and how often it was used?, the longer it's been used the less you should pay. Most things today are not meant to last and are meant to be thrown away after a few years if your lucky hence the one year guarantee.

I wouldn't expect to get 20 years out of a Plasma TV 8or 9 is more like the figure. If it's second hand don't touch it unless it's very cheap. Also remember that it must be transported standing up, lying them flat can easily break the screen.

I will be honest with you - I would never buy a second hand TV unless it had a good warranty with it. Especially a Plasma one - whilst I appreciate that they have come along way from the older ones that leak gas everywhere, TV's are notorious for not liking being moved. The trouble is - budget. You do not say how much it is or where it is coming from....if you are paying a silly price for it, then it may be worth taking a chance - on the other hand, you have to ask why the person is getting rid of it. As for lifespan - there was a programme on TV a while ago that looked into appliance lifespans - it worked out that TV's were amongst the lowest life span expectancy - averaging 5 years! These are all the things you need to consider before paying out for it. Also bear in mind that places like Argos do a buy now pay in six months arrangement - you can buy a 32" HD 1080p TV now for under £400 (LCD)
