  • Answer:

use a scart lead from the sky to the tv if the sky box does NOT have a hdmi port you wont get a hd picture unless its sky+ normal sky does not give you a hd picture there is NO way you will get any HD channel with a normal sky box , plain and simple IF your new tv is a panasonic plasma tv with freesat HD & freeview HD built in, you can bypass the sky box for just now till you get a sky+ box and you can watch a few HD channels right now

Your Sky box doesn't have an RS232 port to output its video. That is only for workshop diagnostic test equipment. If anyone told different then they are wrong. The Audio-Video output is only through the SCART or the aerial (on UHF analogue channel 36 or 38) only. The SCART socket is not capable of High Definition video. Only the Sky High Definition box is equipped with an HDMI socket. If yours doesn't have an HDMI socket then the box is not capable of receiving the HD channels or providing an HD output whatever you try and do. Even if you acquired a Sky HD box you would not be able to tune into the HD channels without paying the extortionate £10 per month additional subscription fee, on top of the fee for each channel. You cannot buy a workable adaptor to convert SCART to HDMI. Anything sold which claims to do this is a fake because a complex box of electronics would also be needed. Simply using an HDMI lead cannot convert standard definition video into High Definition anyway - you need the Sky HD receiver, which you don't have.

You need a HD sky box, which will have the hdmi port. There's no other way to get true HD. Depending on the brand of tv it may give a near hd picture by upscaling the aerial or scart signals. Samsung are pretty good at this

RS232 is a data port and has nothing to do with HDMI, if the sky box has no HDMI there is no way to connect the box with an HDMI cable apart from buying an AV Receiver which will upscale to 1080p

Buy a HD Freesat box this will give you several HD channels.

Use the Scart socket on the Sky box and the TV. The RS232 port isn't for video, it's for software updates.
