When will most TV programs be broadcasted in HD?

Why is it on an HD TV, HD programs on HD channels don't use the entire TV screen, ie black on top & bottom?

  • Mitsubishi 52 inch DLS HD with Dish Network HD service. HD programs on HD channels have Black on the top and on the bottom of the screen, why?

  • Answer:

The source of the problem is mostly the DISH net reciever or program Start by calling 1-800-Dish net one of thier reps should be able to walk you thru the setup for the reciever output Also many programs you see on HDTV channels on DISH are not actually HDTV programs they are standard def programs with a sync change However old standard def programming is 4:3 so if that was that source you would see bars on left and right However if the 4:3 has embedded letterboxing you would then see black bars top and bottom and only ZOOM will remove them Also a possibility your TV has a 4:3 aspect ration screen you didnt include a model number so I cant check all HDTV is 16:9 standard is 4:3 or 16:12 basically 1.5 top and 1.5 bottom black when viewing 16:9 on a 4:3 screen

I've seen this sometimes with movies that were originally shot in cinemascope, and with things that are actually "letterboxed". But if you mean that all your HD programming appears like that, I'd say you have a set up problem, either on your TV or your sat box.

Check the settings on 'aspect ratio' in the menu or in the manual; I'm not sure what they are supposed to be off the top of my head, but it may be the 3:4 of standard broadcast is on. If that doesn't help check the networks webpage and see if they list which aspect ratio they are broadcasting. Good Luck!

Im not sure if this answers right but i think it depends on what tv you got or what settings you have. I have a cheap samsung hdtv and it works perfectly with no bar on the top or the bottom
