Why doesn't my HDTV get HD Channels?

  • I have a magnavox HDTV that I got a couple years ago. I live on campus and i brought it to my dorm. My roommate has a Vizio HDTV. We get basic cable through the cable on the wall. We bought a splitter a so we could both watch our own things. He gets regular and HD Channels (the channels are like 4 and then the HD one is 4.1) but I don't get HD channels. I only get the regular channels (the channel will only be 4 and there will not be a 4.1). I tried plugging it directly into the cable, but still no HD channels. I don't understand why it wouldn't get HD channels if its an HDTV. Anyone know why this could be?

    His TV is full HD with a built in quam tuner. Sounds like your set is HD ready, which means you need a set top box (cable box) to get HD. You probably only have a NTSC tuner. Which is analog only.

Your friend's TV has an optional QAM tuner, which is necessary for receiving HD channels, like 4.1, on basic cable without a box. Every TV sold today (in the U.S. anyway) must have two tuners, one for digital over-the-air and one for analog cable. But the QAM tuner is not a requirement, and cheaper sets skip it. Without a QAM tuner in your set, you can still receive HD channels with a good over-the-air antenna.

You have to get the tv to scan the channels on the initial set up. It will take around 10 to 15 minutes for the tv to scan all the channel and put it in memory. Look on you owners manual for the proper initial set up. Hope this will help you out.

It's possible you may not have a working HD tuner through the coax, or it might be you do get those channels, you just don't know how to access them.
