Is there a digital converter box I can get that has a DVR also?

How do I get my VCR to record a show while hooked up to a High definition converter box? ?

  • I want to record shows on my VCR to 'time shift' how do I get my VCR to record shows through a high definition tv converter box. As of right now the VCR will only record shows if the channel on the HD converter box is set to that channel and the converter box has not shut its self off. I do NOT under ANY circumstances want to pay for TV! Cable any any other type of pay for view is definitely out of the question. I do not get payed enough nor do I have enough time to waste watching the idiot box to pay for it on a monthly basis. That is not to say there are not good shows on cable/satalite it is just that I am on a very limited budget with very limited resourses and paying for TV is out of the question. There are television shows that I would like to see on public telivision ( the only semi intelligent TV worth watching) but are on at inconvenient times SO I record them on a VCR and watch them at my convenience. NOW I will repeat the question, how do I get my VCR to record from a high definition converter box i.e after February 2009? I do not want to get cable or satellite, I want my VCR to record shows using the converter box. Right now the box is off(not hooked up) until I solve this problem.

I assume you have a coupon type converter box. By default, all of these converters have a 4 hour shutoff timer. But all of them have a place to shut this (government mandated) feature off in the converter's menu. Shut the timer off to use with VCR. If you want to program recordings on more than one channel, you need a converter model with a "VCR Timer". See the first link below for example. Walmart does carry DVD/Hard drive recorders with digital tuners. These program like a VCR and do away with having to program the converter box and VCR separately.

First, understand that it's not a high definition converter box. It's a digital converter. The two are not the same. The converter receives digital TV signals and converts them to analog channel 3 or 4 so that you can watch them on an old analog set. To use a VCR with a digital converter: 1. Connect a very good antenna to the converter's input. 2. Connect the converter's coaxial output to the VCR's antenna input. 3. Set the VCR output to channel 3. Make that channel 4 if you have a strong channel 3 in your area. 4. Set the VCR tuner to the same channel as step 3 and leave it there permanently. 5. Set your TV's tuner to the same channel as step 3 and leave it there permanently. 6. Set your VCR to pass-through. 7. Select the desired digital channel with your converter's remote. Get a good picture on your TV. 8. Program your VCR for the desired time span to record. 9. Leave the converter and VCR as-is until recording is complete. You cannot watch one channel while recording another.
