What is the difference between HD TV and HD ready TV?

At what point is the difference between standard and HD tv noticeable?

  • Obviously, there is a difference in quality between standard and HD tv, but it's kind of misleading if you're standing two feet from it at the store. If you were to sit at normal distance from a tv in an easy chair, what size would the tv have to be in order for you to notice a difference between standard quality and HD quality? Obviously, if I had a tv that was 12 inches and it was across the room, I'd never be able to tell the difference between standard and HD. If my tv was 90 inches, I'd definitely be able to tell. So in real life (i.e. not in a store), at what size does a tv have to be to have a noticeable difference between standard and HD?

  • Answer:

How much of a videophile are you? The answer really depends on that. In your example of a 12 inch TV, I could instantly tell the difference from across the room between a standard and HD broadcast. But I work in video. It's a subjective question but I'd say if you're buying an HDTV you should get one at least 36" to be worth it.

A good NTSC signal looks good up to 27". Once you start getting larger than this (depending on distance from the set) you may start to see the difference in resolution. The biggest difference is what you're feeding into the TV. In most instances cable and satellite outfits are allocating more bandwidth to the HDTV channels and, therefore, they will look better, even when down-converted and displayed on an SD screen.

We got an HD tv a couple years ago, and while I am sitting in my "easy chair" right now, The quality is MUCH better. Once you are used to HD, normal television looks HORRIBLE. The minimum size in my opinion would be about 30-50". They are really good TVs and they are worth all the money. Hope it helps.

I can EASILY tell that my laptop is HD, even though it's 15.4". If I sat 10 feet back though, it could be another story. From 10 feet or so away, I'd say maybe 22". I mainly watch HDTV on my 24" monitor, and I can tell the difference between standard def. quite easily at 8 feet back.

I just got a 19" HDTV and the SD picture is HORRIBLE, I can't wait to get a HD box installed. I can tell the difference almost immediately with TV, computers though, I can only tell if I am watching video.

i would say a 32 inch is when you start seeing a difference
