Can I watch TV through my laptop with an HDMI Cable?

How do i use an hdmi cable to watch things on my laptop on my tv?

im using the hdmi cable from my cable box to connect my tv to my laptop so i can watch a movie on the internet on my tv but it says no connection on my tv when i have the cable plugged in. is their a program or something i need?
Answer:

use a dvi - hdmi cable for picture also a sound cable (both tips 3.5 mm stereo ) . connect this to pc audio on tv .

Your computer might not be compatible with the tv. If your tv has a vga port that would probably work better but then you would have to plug your sound system into your laptop/pc aposed to just your tv.

It should work. I don't see any problem. Make sure you select the HDMI mode in your tv after connecting the HDMI cable.
