How do you unlock channels on freeview?

I've just bought a tv with built in freeview but it can't find any channels.?

  • I bought a tv with built in freeview and when i plugged it into the aerial it can only find 4 analogue channels which are very fuzzy, no freeview channels are found. I've scanned the tv for both freeview and analogue and tried the tv at my parents house and it works perfectly so its not a faulty tv. Has anyone got any clues as to why i can't find freeview channels?? This is also the case for the main tv downstairs but because i have virgin media it doesn't bother me. Is it possible that i only have an analogue aerial? I am completely clueless.

  • Answer:

Is the TV ariel pointing in the right direction. You say even with analogue the TV channels are fuzzy. That would suggest that the ariel is pointing in the wrong direction.

The built in freeview operates on an analogue signal. Your arial may need repositioning, or you may be in a bad reception area. There is a freesat service which is digital (and increaingly HD), but you need a dish and a decoder for that. Freesat is installed on a not for proffit basis, so isn't prohibitively expensive. Freesat should probably be considered over having your existing arial repositoned as the anologue signal is due to be switched off in the coming years. http://www.freeview.co.uk/

First off, there is no such thing as a "digital" aerial (except in the minds of aerial salesman). All aerials work in the analogue domain. Having said that, what type of aerial are you using? Indoor and loft aerial are utterly useless for Freeview, unless you live very close to the transmitter. If you want to be able to receive Freeview, you'll need an externally mounted roof aerial (and don't get conned into buying a nonexistent "digital" one, either...).

Try a booster before you get a new aerial. (Argos)

I would guess that your assumption is correct. You need a digital antenna. Maybe go to buy or borrow a set top digital antenna and try it to see if that is the problem. You can always return it. That is the best way I can figure to troubleshoot the problem with out spending much money if any.

I'm afraid you'll need to buy a digital antenna to receive those channel's properly - the antenna usually costs £40.00 but that also includes fixing and fitting, which isn't such a bad price!!!

Try a newer aerial. Or get a scart lead. Try that. Or it could be the fact freeview doesn't work well in your area.
